Report on the Second AEA Member Survey on the Professional Climate in Economics
In April 2018, the AEA Executive Committee voted to establish a standing Committee on Professional Climate (CPC). One of the recommendations of that committee was for the AEA to regularly assess the professional climate in economics. Following this recommendation, the AEA administered its first professional climate survey in 2018/2019, the findings of which were shared in this report.
In fall of 2023, the Association conducted a second member survey to assess whether and how the climate has changed. The Association also hoped to learn how members perceive the various initiatives and programs that were implemented in light of the first survey.
The CPC has now completed the final report from the second member survey, which can be found at https://www.aeaweb.org/resources/member-docs/2023-climate-survey-report. Preliminary results of the second survey were shared previously at the 2024 ASSA Annual Meeting in a session titled “Working to Change the Climate in Economics.” A recording of the session is available here.
The AEA leadership extends its appreciation to the members of the CPC for their time and dedication to the survey’s design, implementation, and final report. While much work remains, the Association continues to be deeply committed to its members and to the profession as a whole.
