About CSWEP
The Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession (CSWEP) was established by the American Economic Association in 1971. The CSWEP board, along with its affiliates and network of departmental liaisons, serves professional women economists by monitoring their progress and promoting their careers.
Each year, CSWEP surveys US economics departments regarding the gender composition of faculty. Summaries and analysis of the survey results are reported in the AEA Papers and Proceedings and reprinted in the CSWEP Annual Report.
CSWEP distributes information on the economics profession, career development, and professional opportunities via free digital subscriptions to CSWEP News, published four times a year. CSWEP News promotes increased awareness of the challenges unique to women's careers, but is relevant to all early-career economists regardless of gender, race, or ethnicity.
A number of important networking and career development events are held by CSWEP each year, including the internationally renowned CeMENT Mentoring Workshops for female junior faculty. At the ASSA Annual Meeting and the meetings of the five regional economics associations, CSWEP organizes paper sessions, roundtables, panels, and mentoring events.
To recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women in economics, CSWEP awards the annual Carolyn Shaw Bell Award to an individual furthering the status of women in the economics profession, the biennial Elaine Bennett Research Prize to a woman within ten years of receiving her PhD who has made fundamental contributions to economics, and the annual Janet L. Yellen Award for Excellence in Public Service to a senior economist for exemplary public service.
